The best way to get ahead in the future is to be ready for it. This doesn't mean you have to always be worried about what's going to happen next, but it does mean that if you know what you want out of the future you have to put some effort into making that desire come to life.
So, I have things I want out of life. Some are silly, like wanting to know how to play the recorder, and some are just plain good for me, like wanting to weigh 70 lbs less than I do now. Other things are somewhere in between. If I ever want to see any of this happen though, I have to make some sort of plan of attack. So, in no particular order, here's what I want to have happen, and the amount of time I plan on spending to make it so. This is sort of my "What I want out of life," list, I suppose:
Weigh 230 lbs - 1 hour each day spent in exercise. This could be anything from an actual workout, to playing outdoors with the girls. I was doing well with this a while ago, but stopped for lots of reasons, none of them really that good. Time to get back to it. Also, my eating program is going relatively well, so this goal is very reachable. This will also help me get into better shape so that I can meet such goals as being able to run a 10 minute mile, wearing size 36 pants, bike ride 20 miles, etc. This is much bigger than just my weight.
Learn to play the recorder - Practice 1/2 hour to 1 hour each day. The only way to get better at something like this IS to practice. Without practicing, I'll never get better. I want to know at least one or two songs by the next LARP date, and that's going to be difficult, so I should be doing more rather than less for now.
Grow a successful vegetable garden - Spend 1/2 hour every day gardening. Weed, prune, turn the compost heap, water the garden when it needs it. If all this is done within a half hour, do research; find out other ways to ensure a happy garden.
Make money to pay off CC debt - Work 6 hours a day. As long as there are enough records for me, I can get 480-600 records done in 6 hours, which would take my current earnings and just about double them. This is a good thing, but it assumes a constant amount of records. We'll see how that goes.
Become fluent in Arabic - During the summer I will spend 1/2 hour every day just studying what I've already learned. Next semester, between class, studying, and homework, I'm sure it will be more. I think it was theferrett who said it takes 10,000 hours of practice at any skill to master it; I have to spend some time each day, or I'll never make it.
So far that gives me 9 hours of things to do in the day. Add on all the normal daily stuff one does, and that's a pretty full day, every day. As long as I start getting up at 5 AM again, like I want to, I'll have plenty of time to get everything done.
Of course, I can't really practice the recorder at 5 AM while Maria tries to sleep, but I can work out, or read Arabic primers. I can wait to practice the recorder when she's gone at 8, then I start work at 9. Really, this is a very doable schedule.
I just have to get my ass out of bed in the morning.
Damn. I hate these kinds of decisions. |
